Canon Rebel Xt Driver For Mac

  1. Canon Rebel Xt Drivers For Mac
  2. Canon Rebel Xt Software

Canon has quite a confusing mess of drivers and software for their digital cameras. I’m going to try to sort them out here.

Model Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT (with 18-55mm lens, silver). Drivers & Utilities System Requirements for PC Connection. Operating System Support. Apple Mac OS 9.0 - 9.2, Apple Mac OS X 10.1. Does anyone know where I can find the Digital rebel XT drivers for mac online? I am at school right now and recently tried putting pictures on my computer, but was unable to because the software that came with my 350D is sitting in my shelves at home.: (.

Recently in September of 2006 Canon updated some of this stuff, so it’s worth paying a visit to their web site to check it out.

On the Canon Download Library page, you will have to make some selections on pull down menus:

  1. Select a Category: EOS SLR Camera Systems
  2. Select Product Type: Digital EOS Cameras
  3. Select Mode: Pick your specific camera model

For this example, I picked the EOS Digital Rebel XT. Note that you need different software and drivers depending on your particular camera model, and your particular computer operating system.

Most of these pieces of software are updates for previous versions. You generally must have a previous version installed for the updater to work. The original versions are usually supplied with the camera when you buy it.

On the next page that comes up, select the Drivers and Software link.

Ok, so what the heck is all of this stuff for?

Here’s the way it works

If you want to hook your camera up to your PC computer and use it to download, or view images on your camera, or to control the camera from the computer, you need:

  1. A Driver
  2. Camera Control Interface Software
  3. Viewing, Editing, and Camera Control Software

The WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) driver enables the software to communicate with the hardware (camera) on Windows XP. The TWAIN driver does the same thing in Windows 98 and Windows 2000.

EOS Utility, or CameraWindow and EOS Capture software then control your camera through either ZoomBrowser / ImageBrowser or Digital Photo Professional.

ZoomBrowswer is for PCs, ImageBrowswer is for Macs.

With ZoomBrowser/ImageBrowswer you can browse, download, manipulate the images, and control the camera on your computer. You can also work with raw files and control the camera with Digital Photo Professional.

Pay attention to which specific version you need for your particular operating system. Also, some particular pieces of software will only work with specific camera models.

Here is what each one does quoted from Canon’s documentation:

WIA (Windows Image Acquisition ) Driver – To connect your Canon digital camera with a Windows XP computer via USB cable.

Note: If you have previously installed a USB TWAIN driver for your camera, it must be uninstalled first before installing the USB WIA Driver.

TWAIN Driver – To connect your Canon digital camera to a computer running Windows 98 or Windows 2000.

EOS Utility is software exclusively for EOS Digital cameras that combines all the functions involving communication with the camera. This software accommodates features such as importing and viewing images on the computer by connecting the camera to the computer, using the remote shooting function, and controlling the camera from the computer to specify the camera settings. It integrates with Digital Photo Professional and ZoomBrowser/ImageBrowser for a fast and seamless digital workflow.

EOS Utility also allows you to remotely operate the camera from your computer using the supplied interface cable. You can fire the shutter release immediately, with a delay of up to 30 seconds, or automatically at intervals (5 seconds to 60 minute intervals in 1-second increments).

EOS Viewer Utility does not support the Kiss Digital N, Digital Rebel XT, 350D, 5D, or 1-D Mark II N. For these cameras, you must use EOS Capture.

The Kiss Digital X, Digital Rebel XTi, and 400D are supported models.

EOS Capture enables you to control the camera from your computer using the remote shooting function with the timer or interval timer, or to specify the camera settings.

Though EOS Capture 1.5 for Windows is installed separately, it is used as a part of:

– ZoomBrowser EX 5.2.1 or later
– EOS Viewer Utility 1.2.0 or later
– Digital Photo Professional 2.0.2 or later.

CameraWindow DSLR is software to transfer and display images and to control the camera with Windows98SE/Me, and requires ZoomBrowser EX ver. 5.6.

ZoomBrowser EX, as well as managing images shot using a digital camera, also enables you to take full advantage of your camera’s built-in functions. Not only does ZoomBrowser EX provide a simple straightforward procedure for everything from downloading, organizing and editing images through to printing your images or sending them as e-mail attachments, it also offers a range of features specifically designed to combine with and make the most of your camera’s functions. Some of these features are RAW image processing, panorama image composition, and a remote shooting function that lets you control the camera from your PC.

Digital Photo Professional is software primarily for editing and converting RAW images shot by EOS Digital cameras. You can also remotely control the camera with Digital Photo Professional and the appropriate cable.

Photo Stitch is software for making panoramas from multiple individual images.

Time Exposures Longer than 30 Seconds

Note that in all instances of Canon’s software that can control the digital camera remotely, the longest shutter speed you can use is 30 seconds. For longer exposures, you need to use the camera’s “bulb” function. This is usually set on the shutter speed dial, but the shutter can only be opened remotely with the “bulb” plug and a remote release. This plug is located on the side of the camera by the USB and video out plugs.

The bulb plug and cable are different than the USB plug and cable that control all of the rest of the functions of the camera.

To shoot exposures longer than 30 seconds controlled by your computer, you need two cables: one USB for the camera settings, and a remote release for the bulb plug on the side of the camera..

The USB cable usually comes with the camera, but there is nothing special about it, it is usually just a standard USB plug on the computer side and a small USB plug on the camera side.

The bulb remote release cable is a different story. The high end cameras, like the Canon 20D and 30D take a proprietary plug, the “N3” connector. Cameras like the 350D or Rebel XT, take a standard 2.5mm 3-conductor male plug, a mini version of what is found on the end of most iPod and Walkman stereo headphones.

For the computer, you usually need a serial cable. To use both to control the long time exposures with the bulb setting you will need to purchase some type of remote release with the N3 connector and then mate it to the serial cable. Or, you can buy one from Hap Griffin’s Astrocables.

You will also need another program like Images Plus, MaxDSLR or DSLR Focus to control the length of your exposures longer than 30 seconds with the bulb plug, cable and computer. The camera manufacturer’s programs that control the camera remotely through the USB cable do not offer exposures longer than 30 seconds.
